The University of South Florida said it would immediately begin a search to replace executive associate athletic director Bill McGillis, who was named the athletic director at Southern Mississippi on Thursday.
McGillis was responsible for USF's football, baseball and softball programs as well as the athletic department's marketing, ticket sales, merchandising, communications and corporate sponsorships. McGillis, who had been at USF since 2007, also led the department's long-term strategic plan, including the campus Athletic District.
"This is a great opportunity for Bill and one he certainly deserves," USF athletic director Doug Woolard said in a statement. "He has contributed greatly to our athletic program since his arrival in 2007. I want to congratulate him and his family and wish him great success in this new role. I know he will do an outstanding job for the Golden Eagles."
Southern Miss President Rodney Bennett introduced McGillis to the media in Hattiesburg on Thursday.
McGillis replaces Jeff Hammond, a former Golden Eagles quarterback and retired Army general who took the post after six months as interim athletic director. Hammond's contract was not renewed.
The Golden Eagles are a member of Conference USA.
