PLANT CITY The Plant City Garden Club didn't just wow its guests with its 2012 flower show.
It seems the club's 62 members had quite an impact on a much larger scale.
The club recently learned that the 2012 show won an award from the National Garden Clubs Inc. for best flower show of the year in the United States.
"We beat everybody in the entire nation," said Cassandra Banning, a member and former club president.
The show had a theme "From Sea to Shining Sea," and displays at the show included a mock beach, complete with a surf board.
The club submitted to the national organization photos of the flower show, comments from judges who judged the show, and examples of publicity about the event.
The club and its members also won three state awards for the 2012 flower show, including best center of interest (focal point); best petite arrangement, Darcy Stottlemyer; and horticulture award, Jan Griffin.
The club leaders announced the national honor during the installation of officers for 2013-14. The installation, including a dinner, was at the home of Joanne and Greg Mason.
New officers included Christy Linke, president; Cindy Card, first vice president; Bess Treadwell, second vice president; Joey Findlay, corresponding secretary; Marci Wilcox, recording secretary; and Jan Griffin, treasurer.
The Garden Clubber of the Year for outstanding service to the Plant City club was presented to Jan Griffin and Lisa Firm. Griffin was presented with the People's Choice Award and Laurie Pettit won the novice award.
