What is NIE News In Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between schools and The Tampa Tribune to promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource. As part of our commitment to improving education, NIE, in partnership with WFLA-TV News Channel 8 and TBO.com, has expanded to reflect a multi-media strategy. The NIE team has been working closely with WFLA-TV and TBO.com to develop curriculum activities that will enhance students' and teachers' educational experiences. NIE provides schools with class sets of The Tampa Tribune, plus our award-winning study guides, at no cost to teachers or schools. Due to shrinking school budgets, newspapers have become an invaluable tool to teachers. The Tampa Tribune absorbs all production costs and half the cost of newspapers; the other half of the newspaper cost is paid for through the sponsorships of generous community-minded companies, foundations and individuals. The Tampa Tribune and our NIE curriculum are rich educational tools, offering teachers an up-to-the-minute, living text and source for countless projects in virtually every content area. Through the generosity of our sponsors, we can deliver Tampa's newspaper and quality curriculum to thousands of eager and deserving students and grateful teachers. The Tampa Tribune's NIE program promotes the use of newspapers as an integral part of the academic program. With training and a variety of curriculum resources, teachers make The Tampa Tribune a living textbook that features current, real-world information. Using the newspaper and NIE's curriculum on a regular basis helps students develop daily reading habits that they will carry through their lives. Our sponsors have the satisfaction of supporting literacy and analytical thinking skills, broadening students' horizons and helping to build the responsible citizens of tomorrow. These newspapers provide a vital link to the real world for students who too often do not realize the value of their academic programs. The study of today's critical issues, events and people helps pupils understand the past and see a role for themselves in their future world. Student interests, from sports to entertainment, become the arena for practicing basic enrichment skills and understanding concepts as students use statistics and other data to compute, invest and comparison-shop. The newspaper offers a living, changing textbook that brings the real world into the classroom. The newspaper is that essential link that connects the classroom to the past, present and future. Literacy begins with our children and our schools.
